ADRIENA BARTOŠOVÁ (SK) Jazz for the soul
Adriena Bartošová-Bučková was born on April 12th, 1960 in Slovakia. For ten years she has studied classic singing and piano playing in Bratislava, graduating in 1978; then followed by experimental studies of pop-music singing in 1982. She has learned the essentials of composition from professor Hrušovský.
After graduating the university (The methods of mathematics, University of Economy, 1984) she started her professional career as a singer. She performed her own songs and compositions in various programs (Studio S, Slovak National Theater, Istropolis), accompanied by the Slovak TV Orchestra and by The Gustav Brom Big Band. She founded her own band SCAT in 1987 and they were celebrated as the “Newcomer of the Year” at the international festival Bratislava Jazz Days. The band still accompanies her today — she toured Finland, Germany, Czech Republic, England, Poland, etc. Adriena performs mostly her own compositions, but there are a lot of jazz standards in her repertoire, mainly South American bossa novas. Her music is best expressed on her first CD Harmony of Rain, but also on the others — Blue Afternoon, Mais Que Nada and Adriena. The latter CD is interesting aIso because it features a multimedia track where Adriena’s fans could get information on Adriena’s musical career as well as listen to the sound bites from other Adriena’s albums, learn what the critics say and watch excerpts from videos and live performances.
Aside from her career as a perfomer, Adriena is also a teacher – she has been teaching the art singing at the Drama Faculty of the Art Academy in Bratislava for 15 years.
In 1994 Adriena´s work was acknowledged by the Slovak Music Fund, which awarded her the Ladislav Martoník Prize for creative work and singing on the Slovak jazz scene.
Due to the fact that her music combines jazz with rock, etno, classic and Eastern music, her concerts are popular not only among the music experts but they also attract broader audience, though she’s not part of the style, most commonly known as “the middle stream”.
Adriena is often called The First Lady of Jazz Music. She performs with many bands, mostly with her own band Adriena S Band (formerly SCAT), but also in duo or trio with the top Slovak jazz musicians J. Burian, M. Breznický, S. Paluch, K. Lago J. Griglak... She´s also a frequent guest in the Gustav Brom Big Band shows.
