Kornel Földvári

KORNEL FÖLDVÁRI (2016)
* Born: 13th February 1932 in Trenčín
† Died: 26th March 2015 in Bratislava
Renowned persona of Slovak journalism, theorist of humour and detective stories, and a person with the unique gift to bring together, not divide. He was born in a family, for which he was persecuted his entire childhood and youth. First, his semi-aryan descent was a problem, and later, it was his semi-bourgeois descent. He knew how it felt like to be betrayed by friends, who voted for him being expelled from college. At the Technical Support Battalion ("PTP"), also known as the Black Barons, he came to know loneliness, inhumanity and bullying. Through all of that, he never turned bitter, and his laugh and optimism became legendary. Since the 60's, he worked in Kultúrny život, and was the director of Divadlo na korze. Post-1998, he had to give up on civic engagement, an ordeal he considered very harsh. He tried to publish something at least via pseudonyms of friends. Under his name, he published O stručnosti (On briefness, 1999), Poviedky z naftalínu (The naphtalene stories, 2003), and essays Svet pre dvoch (A world for two, 2004) about Lasica and Satinský. He was the editor of an anthology of Slovak prose, Slovenská čítanka – 14 ostrých (Slovak textbook – 14 full bullets, 2005), and Päťadvadsať (Twentyfive) with the subtitle "The book about Slovak caricature". For his collection of essays O karikatúre (On caricature, 2006), he won the Dominik Tatarka literary award. In 2009, he published the collection of articles O detektívke (On detective stories). His last book was about touching stories from the mandatory military service and the PTP called "...až pod čiernu zem" ("...beneath the black soil"). Kornel Földvári died in the spring of 2015. At his funeral on April 1st, all four seasons came and went, as if the sky wanted to remember the unbelievable fate of this precious person.
