VIKTOR KUBAL (2006)

Graphic artist, cartoonist, screenwriter, film director, writer, actor, comedian, founder of the Slovak cartoons. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts, specializing in a photography and film (teacher Ľudovít Fulla, František Reichentál, Karel Plicka), at the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava from 1943 to 1944, drawing and painting department (educator Maximilián Schurmann). He worked at the Institute for Education and Edification Film between 1943 – 1945, and from the year 1945 in Czechoslovak Film in Bratislava. Later he worked in the magazine Bojovník (1950 - 1952) and the humorous magazine Roháč (1952-1964). After 1965, he worked as a director and animator of the Czechoslovak film in Bratislava. Viktor Kubal participated at the birth of the first Slovak animated film – The Well of Love (1943) in the Institution for the creation of learning tools ŠKOLFILM. From the sixties he was one of the prominent representatives of the world’s animated film. The particularity of his work was that he was not only the author of the artistic and animated designs, but also the creator of subject matter, screenplays and also the director. As a director and animator he created nearly 400 short-length animated films (Poof and Moof, Johnny Pea, Dita, Dummy from the crossroad) and several full-length animated films (The Robber Georgie, Bloody Lady). His style is characterized by abridged drawing, humour and deliberate dramatization of stories. On the occasion of the zero year of the Festival KREMNICA GAGS in 1981 he became the first rector of the imaginary University of Humour and Satire which was founded on the day of its origin.

Participant of international exhibitions FIDEM across Europe and of international symposia of cast medals. Holder of numerous awards. Author of the design and implementation of coins of the Slovak Republic (10 h, 20 h, 50 h, 1 Sk, 2 Sk, 5 Sk, 10 Sk). Draftsman of state awards of the SR (Order of Ľudovít Štúr, Cross of M. R. Štefánik, Pribina’s Cross), author of small coins with motifs of Kriváň and of a plenty of commemorative coins. Author of commemorative medal to 30th year of the Festival of Humour and Satire KREMNICA GAGS. He currently lives and works as a freelance artist in Kremnica.
